This is a new branch line which aims to increase the tram's passenger flow, whilst at the same time reducing the traffic congestion that currently plagues the island's urban areas.
The Indian civil construction company Larssen & Toubro, the main contractor for the project, has once more entrusted CAF T&E to perform the work for this new extension with regard to: specifically, the company is in charge of the design, installation and commissioning of the tramway signalling system, the operation support system (SAE or AVLS), the traffic light regulation system, as well as the comprehensive management of the entire scope of the CAF Group, in addition to the integration of the latter with the rest of the project's systems.
According to Ander Montes, Project Manager for the tram project on behalf of CAF Turnkey & Engineering, "Larssen & Toubro placing its trust in us once more is fruit of the excellent relationship that exists between both teams."
CAF T&E has been working on the construction of the Mauritius Metro Express tramway in Mauritius since 2018. It is the first line to be built on the island since the last commercial trip in 1956 and the complete dismantling of the country's old railway infrastructure in 1964.
The line which is currently under construction extends for 26km. It runs from the capital, Port Louis, to the town of Curepipe, passing through the island's most densely populated urban centres: Beau Bassin, Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes and Phoenix-Vacoas. The service is thus available to the country's more than 1.2 million inhabitants.
In addition to the aforementioned 26 km of track being built, following the route of the old railway line, the scope of the project includes 19 stops. Likewise, CAF S.A. has supplied a total of 18 Urbos 100 units, as well as workshop equipment and a simulator for training tram operators/drivers.
